Painting of Archbishop John Joseph Lynch, third Bishop and first Archbishop of Toronto, hangs in the sacristy of St. Michael's Cathedral.
When Canada was born on July 1, 1867 Bishop John Joseph Lynch was reigning over the Diocese of Toronto. Three years later during Vatican Council I the diocese was raised to an archbishopric by Pope Pius IX and Bishop Lynch became Archbishop Lynch.
