You Know You Need An Altar Rail When...

The same velvet ropes which keep dweebs like us out of the hottest nightclubs must also keep curious tourists and the mentally infirm out of the Sanctuary.

I have it on *very* good authority that St. Michael’s Cathedral will be getting an altar rail again! Why not support such an excellent project with a donation?

  1. I Remember attending the Cathedral years ago. One Sunday after the 9pm mass my soon to be husband and myself were speaking with a priest at the back and along walks a man into the centre aisle. All of a sudden he starts running up the aisle and does a jump over the altar - like in grade school with the Jump horse!
The ushers ran up and quickly escorted him out without a word.
Not sure if things like that still happen.
In that cathedral - it would be nice for more people to view the tabernacle in the centre with an altar rail.

  2. Things like that do still happen, although I can't claim to have seen anything nearly that dramatic! An altar rail should help (and is good for other reasons too).

  3. I remember attending a Sunday noon Mass at the Cathedral and a homeless person walked up the aisle during the homily and lit his cigarette off one the floor mounted Altar candles. It was only then that an usher reacted to remove him. I think it was Cardinal Carter giving the homily (gee, I feel old[er]). I was on the other side about half way back and was surprised that he got away with it. Well, today as a Knight of Columbus I'd probably tackle him; in a charitable manner, of course!

  4. I wonder how long it took the dicastery to approve the Altar Rail.
